With Rick's management, the business has grown and evolved from a one-person operation into Barnes & Associates as it is today. He continually looks for opportunities to improve and diversify the services offered by Barnes & Associates.
Rick works hard to hire high quality staff who have the attitude that quality is essential and hard work is a given. He strives to maintain a staff with the wide range of skills and expertise needed to manage complex and diverse natural resource projects.
Rick serves as manager for many of the projects undertaken by Barnes & Associates. He works to secure the resources needed for each project and monitors staff performance to assure the needs of the client are being met.
Rick has recently participated on multi-disciplinary forest certification teams to certify that forestlands are being managed according to the standards and guidelines of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. He is also trained to certify family-owned tree farms under the standards of the American Tree Farm System.
In his spare time, Rick enjoys working and managing the family tree farm in Douglas County. He has utilized his many skills to purchase and improve the forest health and productivity of the property.

| Jay Walters |
 |
|
Jay graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forest Resources, receiving cum laude honors. He also earned the Certified Forester designation from the Society of American Foresters, the national society for forest resource professionals.
|
|
Jay has been involved in forest management since 1981. His experience spans Oregon and Washington from the slopes of the Cascades westward. Jay's responsibilities through the years have included reforestation, silviculture, logging administration, forest inventory and timber cruising.
At Barnes and Associates, Jay has built on his "field forestry" background and applied it in expanded ways: consulting with family forestland owners to understand their management objectives and craft appropriate prescriptions, leading interdisciplinary teams for federal Environmental Assessments, managing timber harvest projects including log marketing and follow-up reforestation, cruising and appraising timber, and writing technical reports and environmental documents.
Jay also manages the GIS department. He is responsible for data acquisition, analysis and mapping for GIS and GPS projects. As he sees it, the challenge is not just the technical side of running data queries or choosing the appropriate analysis tool. The other challenge is to creatively present the data in a clear, easy-to-understand fashion that allows the user to draw meaningful insights and conclusions.
